Le Tournoi des 6 Stations – When Rugby and Skiing meet!

You wouldn’t normally think of rugby and skiing in the same moment, but Le Tournoi des 6 Stations successfully brought the two together last season.

A play on words on the more famous ‘6 Nations’ rugby competition, the organisers have just announced that the ‘Tournoi’ will be returning in winter 2014 for its second edition.

The Resorts

The original competition last year was held in six ‘stations’ (the French word for ski resort):

Les Menuires
Val Thorens
La Plagne
St Gervais
La Clusaz

The Format

Each resort hosted one day of the competition, which included a slalom competition (skiing while holding a rugby ball, in case you were wondering!) and three games of 20 minutes.

The matches were all played over six consecutive days, one in each resort.  A league table was formed and on the final day, head-to-head matches were played for 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th and 5th/6th positions.

The teams were one from each resort, made up of 6 locals, plus two stars.  The stars were ex-players, including internationals of the calibre of Serge Betsen and Christophe Dominici.  The mix was made more interesting by adding in ex-skiers such as Luc Alphand.

This video gives a great idea of how the tournament works:

Holidaymakers were invited last year to try out snow rugby themselves, and try out some friendly games.
