Amazing November snow in the Alps After last season's amazing snow, it's already looking very, very exciting for this year.   It's only the second week of November and Verbier and Tignes are already open, with plenty more snow on the ground elsewhere. All of these photos are from the last two days. Warth Schröcken link to Lech Zürs opens in December The great news for lovers of the Lech Zurs and Warth ski areas is that the two regions will be connected from the start of this season. There will be three days of celebrations from Friday 6 December to Sunday 8 December, when the new Auenfeldjet gondola lift opens. The new lift will mean that holiday makers in the Lech Zurs and Warth region can access 190km of pistes and 47 ski lifts.  Including St Anton, which is only a short bus ride from Lech, those figures increase to 340km and 94 ski lifts. The Arlberg Classic Car Rally comes to Lech This summer in Lech, in the Austrian Tirol, starts off in style with the Arlberg Classic Car Rally. The Arlberg Classic Car Rally 2013 will take place from June 27 to 30, starting and finishing in Lech. The twisty 532 miles route in the dreamlike landscape of the Alps is made up of 18 demanding stages. In 2012, 111 teams from 13 countries took part. Lech snow report suggests snowmaking might be good for the environment A new study financed by the Austrian ski resort of Lech has found that an that an even covering of snow in early autumn actually provides protection for the meadows beneath, helping them to produce a wide variety of flowering plant species in summer. The study looked at the possible effects of a start to snowmaking as early as the start of October – only just after the official end of summer. The existing Vorarlberg guidelines allow snowmaking to start from 20 October, but a recent ruling means that artificial snow can be stockpiled in Lech from 01 October. Making early snow does not affect flora and fauna according to the study.  Vegetation had already died away and depending on the altitude of a resort, snowfall and ground frosts can occur regardless.
