Description
This unique and secluded alpine refuge is hidden away on a plateau high above the Val D'Ayas. Guests are guaranteed an unforgettable and peaceful stay along with access to Italy’s largest ski area.
The main building is a converted 17th century farmhouse and the rest of the hotel consists of various alpine chalets - one of which has seven rooms and its own dining room and can be taken over by large parties.
In good weather, the hotel restaurant, Chalet Lo Pejo, is a 5 min walk across the valley. But when the entire mountainside is covered in a blanket of deep, white snow a shuttle service is provided. The wine list is extensive and the menu is inspired by traditional local recipes and ingredients. At breakfast be sure to try the local cheeses provided by the same cows you can hear making their way to be milked in the mornings.
A snow shuttle is provided by the hotel and takes guests to the Monte Rosa ski area – the largest skiing area in Italy with more than 200 km of runs. Take advantage of access to Italy’s very own Three Valleys. And more adventurous skiers can explore Monte Rosa’s back country by going heli-skiing into untouched territory.
Or ask the friendly staff about wine and food tasting excursions in which local guides will introduce you to the traditional Val d'Aosta cuisine. And if you’re planning a hike through the endless valleys and secluded countryside, staff will be happy to make you a packed lunch to take with you.
When the time comes to go home, as you drive through the torch lit mountain path that leads away from the Hotellerie de Mascognaz, your only regret will be that you didn’t book an extra week at this unparalleled mountain hideaway.
When to Travel
Summer season, late June to early September, is ideal for that peaceful escape into the beautiful scenery of summer in the mountains.
Winter season, December to early April, when the area is covered in a blanket of snow, you'll have access to Italy's largest ski area.
Location
The isolated little mountain village of Mascognaz is 3 km, or 15 minutes from the centre of Champoluc. The village is exclusively accessible through an old rustic trail, by foot or by the use of the hotel’s vehicles: four-by-fours during the summer, and snowmobiles + tracked four-by-fours during the winter.
Private or shared transfers are available from Turin and take 1 hour 30 mins (in good weather conditions) to Champoluc. The hotel will transfer you by snowmobile/snow cat or 4 X 4 from Champoluc to the village of Mascognaz depending on the time of year. Alternatively Milan’s Malpensa and Linate airports offer an alternative route and it takes about 2 hours to 2 hours 15 mins (in good weather conditions) to travel to Champoluc.
