In the local Herero language, Onguma means, "the place you don't want to leave." With a stunning main building and seven luxurious tents, Onguma Tented Camp is an exclusive and chic retreat that lives up to its name.
Sophisticated accommodation, excellent service, delicious meals and a warm and friendly ambiance ensure that guests have an unforgettable African bush experience. The lodge, lounge area, outside pool and tents all overlook an active floodlit water hole and guests are very much invited to spend lazy afternoons soaking up the views and enjoying the daily comings and goings of the wildlife.
The seven tents have been beautifully styled in-keeping with the camp’s natural surroundings. The accommodation is modern and stylish yet whilst maintaining a traditional African safari feel and the tents are perfectly positioned to provide guests with plenty of privacy.
Onguma reserve covers an area of over 34,000 ha and is home to over thirty different animal species. Plains game including kudu, giraffe, eland, oryx, hartebeest, zebra, impala and many more roam freely among the savannah, bush veld and dry pan. Predators although not as easy to spot include lion, cheetah leopard and hyena. Onguma is also home to family of black rhino that have been relocated from Etosha National Park and are closely protected and monitored. Over 300 bird species can be viewed at Onguma and the reserve boasts the biggest breeding colony of white-backed vultures in Namibia. During the summer months Onguma becomes a bird-watchers paradise, with thousands of species migrating to wetlands created by the seasonal rains and is one of the key bird watching sites in Southern Africa.
Onguma also supports the Onguma Hei//om Bushmen Trust which has been created to help protect the local community’s traditional way of life and to provide funds for education, sustainable jobs and healthcare provision. At the end of their stay, guests are asked to make a contribution to the trust.
When to travel
The best time to visit Namibia is between April and October, the days are warm and sunny and rainfall at a minimum. The wet season arrives in December and generally runs through until March.
Onguma Tented Camp is located on the Eastern side of Etosha National Park in Namibia's Onguma Private Game Reserve. One of the world’s largest national parks, Etosha stretches more than 350kms from east to west, covering an area of 22,275 square kms and is home to leopards, lions, cheetahs and black rhinos, providing fantastic game viewing opportunities.
From Windhoek you can take a light aircraft flight (approx. 1 hour 30 minutes) to Onguma's private airstrip near the camp, where a member of staff will meet you and transfer you to the camp. Alternatively, if you wish to self-drive from Windhoek it is approx. 530km and takes approx. 5 hours 30 minutes.
Children under 12 years are not permitted at Onguma Tented Camp.
Families with children are recommended to stay at Onguma Bush Camp as it has family rooms and the lodge is fenced. There is also an open pool and lawned area for children to run around in as well as a games room for older children.
